Working with search results

When you conduct a search, the documents that match your search criteria are listed on the Search Results tab. At the top of the list are the documents that are the most likely solutions to your issue. Documents that are very close matches to your query are distinguished by a gray star. Best matches are above the documents list and are distinguished by a golden star.

Note:  If a single document that resolves your issue can be identified, its contents are displayed in place of the search results. Alternatively, you may be asked to supply more information by completing an interview before the search results are displayed.

Each document’s title is a link that you can click to view the document. Depending on your implementation, other information can be displayed for each document, such as the publication date, publication status (draft or published), and a brief synopsis of the document's contents.

The Search Results tab can also include the following features:

• Browse Categories—A list of the Adaptive Navigation Choices that match your search text, grouped into related categories. Clicking an Adaptive Navigation Choice selects it and displays the Adaptive Navigation tab, where you can provide detailed information that leads you to a solution. For more information, Adaptive Navigation.
• Navigation Choices—A list of the links that lets you narrow the scope of your search. Each time you click a Navigation Choice, the search results are reduced to a smaller, more precise list of documents. (If you do not want Navigation Choices to be returned, you can perform an Advanced Search and deselect the Show focus choices? option.)

The following guidelines can help you work with the search results:

• If the search results exceed a single page, use the Next and Previous links to navigate forward and backward through the results, one page at a time. You can adjust the number of search results displayed on each page by changing your profile.
• If your search returns too many items, enter a word or phrase in the Search Within box and then click Go. This action further filters the results list to show only the documents that include the search text you entered.
• By default, the search results are listed according to their relevance to your search text. You can use the Sort By list to sort them by author, creation date, publication date, most relevant, popular or rating instead.
• If additional Adaptive Navigation Choices or Navigation Choices are available, click more to display them. To reduce either list to the original number of displayed items, click less.
• If the name of a Adaptive Navigation Choice is too long to be displayed in the Browse Categories area, let your mouse hover over it and the name will be displayed in full.
