Using Absolute vs Incremental Encoder Cables (Sigma-III and Higher)
Topic Description

It is important to know the difference when selecting incremental or absolute encoder cables for servomotors.

Resolution

Both cable types (incremetal or absolute) come with same number of wires. The absolute cable (with the battery case) has the battery connected to the two battery terminals (BAT+ and BAT-). An example of wiring is shown below:

The incremental cable may be installed for the following uses:

  • Running an incremental encoder motor
  • Running an absolute encoder motor in incremental mode (setting Pn002 = n.[]0[][])
  • Running an absolute encoder motor in single-turn absolute mode (setting Pn002 = n.[]2[][])
  • Running an absolute encoder motor in multi-turn absolute mode, when battery power is supplied through CN1 BAT+ and BAT- pins
  • Running a batteryless absolute encoder motor in incremental or any absolute mode.
  • Running a single-turn absolute encoder (for example, some Direct Drive motor models)
  • As an extension (such as 30 meter relay cables) of an existing cable run that has battery power supplied to the encoder elsewhere in the system.

The absolute cable may be installed for the following uses:

  • Running an absolute encoder (non-batteryless) motor in multi-turn absolute mode, when battery power is NOT supplied through CN1 BAT+ and BAT- pins

Note: The installation must have only 1 battery source supplying power to an absolute encoder motor.
