oL1 Fault at Low Speeds when the Output Current is Lower than the Motor Rated Current
Topic Description

Depending on the drive model, when using a standard, general-purpose motor, the motor overload detection level (OL1) is automatically reduced when running at lower speeds. This is due to the motor not being able to sufficiently cool itself at a low RPM. Therefore, the drive will appropriately adjust the motor overload detection level according to the motor overload characteristics to protect from overheating throughout the entire speed range.  

  • Monitor U4-16 (oL1 Motor Overload Estimate) will show the percentage of the motor overload detection accumulator. An oL1 fault will occur when this value reaches 100%.
Resolution

Refer to one or more of the possible solutions when an oL1 fault is occurring at lower speeds.

  • Increase the commanded frequency.
  • Reduce the load to decrease the motor current draw (Amps).
  • Set parameter L1-01 (Motor Overload Protection Selection) according to the motor type and/or speed range of the motor.
    • Note: For the different L1-01 settings, refer to the appropriate manual for the drive model being used. 
  • Set parameter L1-01 = 0 to disable the drive's motor overload protection and install an external motor overload.
